PromptPerfect, Jina AI's prompt optimizer, stopped working on 1 September 2026. Its site says the product was retired after Elastic acquired Jina AI in October 2025. If you used it to turn rough prompts into better ones, the closest replacement today is a Chrome extension that rewrites your prompt inside ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, so you no longer paste between a separate app and the chat. If you used its API or model arena, the replacements are different, and both are covered below.
What happened to PromptPerfect?
PromptPerfect's homepage now answers the question "Can this product be purchased?" with a closing notice: following Jina AI's acquisition by Elastic in October 2025, "PromptPerfect will no longer be available after September 1, 2026" (promptperfect.jina.ai).
Elastic bought Jina AI for its search models — embeddings, rerankers and small language models for vector search and retrieval (Elastic's announcement). A consumer prompt tool didn't fit that, so it was closed rather than sold on. The product didn't fail on quality; it was left behind by an acquisition.
What did PromptPerfect actually do?
It bundled several jobs into one web app. Its site lists five features:
- Auto-tune — paste a prompt, get an optimized version back. This is what most people used it for.
- Chat — an assistant that used the optimized prompts to produce content.
- Arena — the same prompt run against several models side by side.
- Prompt as a service — deploy a prompt as an API endpoint.
- Agents — prebuilt assistants for specific tasks.
It supported text models such as GPT-4 and Claude, and image models such as Midjourney. No single tool replaces all five, so start by asking which one you relied on.
Which part do you need to replace?
| If you used PromptPerfect for… | Replace it with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Improving prompts before sending them to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini | An in-chat rewriter extension | Same job, without leaving the chat or pasting back and forth |
| Ready-made prompts for common tasks | A template library such as AIPRM | It gives you prompts rather than improving yours |
| Optimizing prompts for an app or API | OpenAI's Prompt Optimizer in the Playground | Fixes contradictions, unclear instructions and missing output formats in a prompt |
| Comparing models on the same prompt | Running the prompt in each chat, or a model-comparison tool | The arena was the least replaceable part |
The in-chat rewriters, compared
This is the replacement for the Auto-tune workflow, and the category where most PromptPerfect users will end up. The difference is where the rewrite happens: PromptPerfect was a separate site, so every prompt meant copy, paste, optimize, copy, paste back. These extensions put a button inside the chat and replace your text where you typed it.
Checked against each product's own site on 24 September 2026. Prices and limits change, so confirm on the vendor's page.
| Extension | Sites | Free tier | Cheapest paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promptly | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, DeepSeek, Copilot | Free; no paid plan listed | — |
| Velocity | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and more | 10 rewrites a week | $9.99/mo |
| Pretty Prompt | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Lovable, v0 | 5 rewrites a week | $8.25/mo, billed yearly |
| Prompt Genie | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Notion | 1 rewrite a day | From $8/mo, billed yearly |
| PrePrompt | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity | 30 rewrites a month (at launch) | Revealed at launch |
We make PrePrompt, so weigh its row accordingly; the others link to the vendors' own pages. For how to judge any of them — where the rewrite lands, what data leaves your browser, which sites it covers — see the best Chrome extension to rewrite your prompts.
What about image prompts?
PromptPerfect also optimized prompts for image models such as Midjourney. The in-chat rewriters above are built for text chat, not image generators, so they aren't a like-for-like replacement there. For image work, the model's own prompting guide is the most reliable reference.
A five-minute migration checklist
- Collect your best prompts. Anything you copied out of PromptPerfect still works; a prompt is just text.
- Note what the optimizer added. Usually it was the same four things: an audience, context, a format and constraints. This before-and-after post shows the pattern.
- Pick the replacement for the job you used most, using the table above.
- Test it on three real prompts you send every week, and compare the answers — not just how the rewritten prompt reads.
- Check the data scope before you install an extension: what it can read on the page, and what it sends.
Where PrePrompt fits
PrePrompt replaces the Auto-tune half of PromptPerfect: type in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity as usual, click Rewrite next to Send, and the improved prompt replaces yours in the same box. It grades the prompt first and leaves an already-specific one alone, and only the text in the chat box is sent, when you click. It doesn't do image prompts, a model arena or prompt APIs. It launches soon on the Chrome Web Store, with 30 free rewrites a month; join the waitlist to get one email the day it goes live.
TL;DR
- PromptPerfect is no longer available after 1 September 2026; Jina AI's acquisition by Elastic ended it.
- Replace the part you used: an in-chat rewriter for everyday prompts, a template library for ready-made prompts, OpenAI's Prompt Optimizer for API prompts.
- In-chat rewriters remove PromptPerfect's copy-paste loop; most have a free tier.
- Your saved prompts still work anywhere. Rebuild the rest with audience, context, format and constraints.
